Auto sales fall flat in July

Canada's auto market still can't get any traction after the deep recession.

Despite heavy incentives, new car and truck sales fell almost 5 per cent or about 7,300 vehicles in July from the same month last year to 141,472 vehicles, manufacturers reported Wednesday.

The decline continues an up-and-down trend this year where sales have increased in a month and then slipped in the next one, never gaining any momentum in a continuing slow recovery from the 2009 recession.

Overall auto sales — a strong indicator of the economy's health — in the first seven months of this year are up 1.5 per cent to almost 950,000 vehicles from the corresponding 2010 period.

Auto industry watcher Dennis DesRosiers said his firm DesRosiers Automotive Consultants is holding its 2011 forecast to a slight gain of 0.7 per cent even though the market is ahead of that estimate so far this year.

“We're going to hold our forecast for now since there is so much uncertainty out there and more downside threat than upside opportunity,” he added in a note to clients.

Several automakers offered significant incentives ranging from no interest financing to savings worth thousands of dollars that company employees normally receive. Those sweeteners didn't provide much of a boost for General Motors, Toyota and some other automakers whose sales plunged by double digits.

But sales at industry leader Ford Motor Co. of Canada inched up 0.5 per cent to 27,344 vehicles. The sales total represents the best July for Ford in 32 years.

Ford attributed the gain to strong sales of the Fiesta, Fusion and Taurus models and a continuing shift by consumers to fuel-efficient cars because of higher gasoline prices.

Chrysler Canada moved into second place ahead of GM during the month as its volumes climbed 5 per cent to 23,385 for the best July in the company's 86-year history.

“Right now, the only thing hotter than the weather is our products,” gushed Chrysler president Reid Bigland.

Record sales of the popular Dodge Journey crossover vehicle and Jeep Wrangler compact sport utility vehicle fuelled the increase, according to the company,

Business at booming Hyundai Auto Canada also rose 10.9 per cent to a record 12,753 vehicles for July.

Furthermore, the company noted that it sold more cars in Canada than any other automaker in the month again and maintains its standing as segment leader for the year.

CLACKAMAS, Ore . – Terry Emmert might ordinarily describe the drive on U.S. Highway 12 along the Lochsa River as quiet, scenic and tranquil. During the latest shipment, the T800s moved loads with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees in Montana, he added. That speaks to their reliability under extreme conditions.

Emmert’s Kenworth T800s are equipped with 550-hp engines, driven through an 18-speed transmission and backed by a 4-speed auxiliary transmission. The trucks are spec’d for super heavy-haul applications with coolers and an oversized radiator to provide additional cooling. To provide their drivers more room to store their gear and to stretch out, the company recently started adding the Kenworth Extended Day Cab to their T800s. The peeper windows on the Kenworth DayLite® doors and the rounded corner windows on the back of the Kenworth Extended Day Cabs give drivers great visibility to see the road and the loads, Emmert said.
