HYUNDAI ACCENT: Subcompact in name only.
With the new Accent, Hynudai may have forever changed the subcompact car segment.
Available in three trim levels - GLS, GS and SE - and either four- or five-door configurations, the Accent feels like anything but a subcompact vehicle.
"This is a subcompact car, but it has the feel and look of a compact," said Raul Gomila, General Manager of Napleton's Hyundai. "It's blurring the line of the typical subcompact buyer and bringing in a lot of conquest business."
While most manufacturers scale back on design in this segment, Hyundai has done no such thing. The Accent features a modern, fluid look that truly sets it apart from other vehicles in its class. With its chiseled front fascia, flowing lines, and bold rear bumper design and spoiler, the Accent is appealing from every angle.
The interior is remarkably spacious and comfortable as well, and again, not what you'd expect from a vehicle with the "subcompact" tag on it.
The console is easy to read and operate, and steering-wheel-mounted controls also make things more convenient for the driver, as does the Accent's Bluetooth hands-free phone system.
The Accent has a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat that drastically expands your cargo-carrying ability. Overall, the Accent has 111.3 cubic feet of space, which not only surpasses the competition, but would place it in the "compact" class, rather than "subcompact."
Opt for the five-door and you'll get get added versatility without sacrifice any of the styling that the four-door provides.
Most importantly, the Accent is a subcompact that provides full-size safety, featuring six airbags and various systems that are designed to protect driver and passengers in the event of an accident.
Under the hood is a 1.6-liter, Gamma GDI inline-four-cylinder engine that produces 138 horsepower - 25 percent more than the previous engine. It can be paired to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC transmission.
All Accent models with the automatic transmission feature an Active Eco System that modifies engine and transmission control for improved fuel economy.
Regardless of which trim or transmission you select, the Accent gets 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Hyundai says both numbers are best in class.
"The horsepower and engineering in the Accent are incredible, and the result is gas mileage that is almost what you find in a hybrid, but in a conventional automobile," said Gomila.
