The Week in Crime: A Summer Spike in Crime

It was another busy week for the City between 88th July 25 and August 1. The city saw the highest number of crimes crime until this summer, with 24 crimes and three arrests last week. Police reports said under teenage criminals, but always included violent attacks, many robberies and burglaries and a car brazen break-in and a real estate deal that went very wrong for the buyer.

The City has participated in 88th National Night Out in Fort Greene Park this week. The event at the national level aims to foster a relationship between community members and law enforcement.  Tell us locals, with crime up this week, what kinds of programming would you like to see to help curb crime?

Early Morning Attack

-A 33-year-old woman was attacked and robbed on her way to the subway at 5:30 a.m. on July 30, police said. She was walking on Willoughby Avenue near Clinton Avenue when the robber grabbed her from behind, punched her, snatched her purse and escaped in a grey minivan, police said.  The minivan drove east-bound on Willoughby Avenue, the woman told police. The woman’s purse contained a Citibank Visa debit card, a Metrocard, a New York State driver’s license and a $1,340 Visa gift card, police said. Later that day, a man brought the woman’s wallet into the 88th Precinct with the items intact, police said.

Brownstone Apartment a Steal — Literally

-A 36-year-old man reported that he made $5,350 in cash payments from May 17 until July 15 to a man who said he was selling a brownstone apartment, police said. Once the victim moved his property into the building, on Downing Street near Gates Avenue, the owner of the brownstone showed up and told him the apartment was not for sale, police said. The thief said he was going to return with a deed and keys to finalize the deal, but never showed up, the man told police.

A Bold Thief

A thief taking electronics from inside a car parked near Ashland Place and Willoughby Street on Monday morning was interrupted by the car’s owner, but not deterred from finishing the job, police said. On July 29 at 10:15 a.m. a 48-year-old woman saw an unfamiliar person in her car, police said. The victim asked the thief what he was doing and threatened to call the police. The thief told the woman to go ahead and call the police. He then motioned to his waistband, implying that he had a gun, and made a jerking motion toward the victim to get her to move out of his way, police said. He then ran toward Myrtle Avenue on foot with a Sony portable TV, car radio and Garmin GPS valued at $370.

The car has no keyless remote anymore, and they said they disabled it because of an issue with the stock Alarm randomly going off. After checking fuses I'm going to swap the Keyless Entry Module as well from my 95 and get a new remote and try to program it and try my luck. But before I do I wanted to see thoughts on the driver door lock. If its just the switches perhaps/something to do with the wiring just to the driver lock? or the door lock itself... oh, they also messed the trunk latch lock up. Doesnt even open manually anymore, nor from the button on the door. The license plate bulbs dont illuminate either. Could this just simply all be messed up wiring or a singular fuse that controls all of these items? Given the other doors lock/unlock properly from the door switchs, it is unlikely that the window lock/door switch panels are the problem. Far more likely that the driver's door lock actuator and/or the latch mechanism itself is FUBARed. Those could in turn be restricting use of the key in the driver's door cylinder. Driver's doors tend to fail first because they get locked/unlocked much more than the other doors.The first thing to do is remove the door panel and put a lamp on the connector of the actuator door lock, then see if you get the power there when you use the lock button.
