Local briefs: Boys & Girls Clubs receives donations
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa received donations of $12,000 and $3,000 in books, supplies and computer software on Wednesday from the University of Phoenix to recognize the club's impact in the community and to promote literacy and continued education.
The for-profit college has donated more than $800,000 to 20 Boys & Girls Clubs since September, including the central Iowa chapter, and has awarded 22 full-tuition scholarships.
CenturyLink, the telecommunications company that acquired Qwest Communications in April, will be replacing the Qwest brand across Iowa this month.
Transitions began in April when the brand logos first appeared together. CenturyLink will complete the re-branding by Dec. 31, replacing the Qwest logos on buildings, uniforms, company vehicles and retail stores.
Bankers Trust has donated $5,000 to the Wesley Life Adult Day Center in Des Moines for a building expansion.
A one-story building will be built on the Wesley Acres campus, 3520 Grand Ave., to serve 60 to 65 individuals daily. Bankers Trust of Des Moines has 11 branches in the greater Des Moines area and is the state's largest independently owned bank.
The Hunziker family is holding a matching gifts fundraiser to repair the Hunziker Youth Sports Complex, a nonprofit sports complex in Ames.
After last year's flooding, the organization took out a $50,000 loan to rebuild the fields and ballpark, where several youth sports groups practice. Half of the amount is being raised to help the nonprofit recover; the Hunziker family will make a $25,000 matching-funds gift.

Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, has donated $20,000 to the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines' annual fund. The donation was given to the private, nonprofit Civic Center to support continued performance art, theater and music in the central Iowa community.
For its 2010-11 season, the Civic Center hosted more than 360 performances on its three stages.
