Iowa aims to be No. 1 in health

LIFE EVALUATIONS: One's life situation today and in the future, which is heavily influenced by a person's emotional and physical health. EMOTIONAL HEALTH: Daily feelings, clinical depression. PHYSICAL HEALTH: Sick days, chronic conditions, obesity, physical pain, cancer, cold/flu, daily energy. HEALTHY BEHAVIORS: Nonsmoking, healthy eating, exercise. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Satisfaction, using strengths, supervisor relationships. BASIC ACCESS: Health care and insurance, community satisfaction, money for basics, safety.

Iowans should band together to make their state the healthiest in the nation within five years, Gov. Terry Branstad and state business leaders said Wednesday.

"The only way we can solve the health care crisis in America is if we can get the American people to take ownership of their own health," Branstad said in a news conference at the Science Center of Iowa.

The Healthiest State Initiative will be mainly organized and financed by private businesses, including Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the Hy-Vee grocery chain. The aim is to encourage Iowans to improve their diets, to get more exercise and to ease life-shortening stress. Progress will be measured by Gallup-Healthways, which runs a national health survey that currently ranks Iowa as the 19th-healthiest state.

Ric Jurgens, Hy-Vee's CEO, acknowledged that the goals are ambitious. But he said Iowans have a history of working with one another to improve their state.

"We have a unique ability, when we really wrap our arms together, to do some pretty amazing things," he said later.

Beyond improving lives, there's a bottom-line motivation to the initiative. Business and government leaders will be urged to look at the project as economic development, because healthy workers are more productive and because new employers are attracted to areas with strong work forces.

Wellmark, which is the state's largest health-insurer, has pledged to spend $15 million to $25 million over five years. Most of that money will go to help 10 Iowa cities adopt "Blue Zones" programs to improve their residents' physical and emotional health. The program is modeled on a 2008 book by author Dan Buettner, whose team studied four communities worldwide where residents tended to live extraordinarily long and healthy lives.

John Forsyth, Wellmark's president, said his company's investment will include paying for extensive Gallup surveys to see how the state and individual communities progress toward improving health.

I was at a friends home watching the Nascar race.I got your message to Sherri ASAP. Biffy is urinating and she will be getting him to the vet ASAP Monday. I'll keep you posted as best I can. I/we are on vacation and we'll be camping at a near by state park. We come home daily to tend to the cats so I'll post something by late Monday night at the latest. Daddy had been a feral. Not being seen for a day or two wasn't anything to panic over. He showed up in the evening and I knew he was really sick. There was no sign of a fever, so I felt safe. I'd never delt with blockages only illness so fever was the only thing that scared me (back then!). I waited until morning to take him in, and that was too long. Even though that was a very long time ago, I still catch myself listening to the cats pee and being thankful for large pee clumps. Oh, and nobody messes with anybody when they are drinking!!!! I want large intake and large output! Keep those systems running clear!
