TD Bank 250: Theriault's teenage ambition | Sun Journal

OXFORD — Saturday’s exhausting, exasperating Late Model feature at Oxford Plains Speedway was an object lesson in why age and experience don’t tell a young racer’s entire story.

It’s true, a couple of the wrecks involved drivers whose steep, yet-to-be-navigated learning curve has inspired a few veterans to respond with forehead slaps. Their gestures and whispers declare that if they were the legal guardians, the youngsters might have started a rung or two down the racing ladder.

But then along came Austin Theriault. Seventeen, born and raised in Maine’s northern frontier, there was Theriault, reeling in 48-year-old leader Don Wentworth on a troublesome track that has tried the souls of some touring drivers for decades.

“Some parents try to rush their kids right into something like a late model,” Theriault said. “Most of the time you’re better off starting in a mini stock like I did. Those cars are hard to drive. You learn a lot.”

Don’t be fooled: Theriault only looks like the kid who delivers your newspaper or cuts your grass.

He’s part of a youth movement that could have a historic impact on the TD Bank 250 this weekend. Theriault is the youngest in a promising class that includes Brad Babb, 18, of Windham, a recent NASCAR Pro Series feature at Beech Ridge; Ben Ashline, 20, of Pittston, the top rookie on the American-Canadian Tour; and Dave Farrington Jr., 19, of Jay, ranked as high as fourth in OPS points this summer.

Theriault, soon to be a senior at Fort Kent Community School, took his raw talent to ACT in 2010 and wound up seventh in points.

“We had a great year. We finished ahead of people who have been running the tour for years,” Theriault said. “What more could we have we expected?”

That breakthrough season prompted an offer from Vermont car owner Rick Paya and RPM Motorsports, scooping up Theriault for a two-car tandem with seven-time ACT champion and 2010 TD Bank 250 runner-up Brian Hoar.

Six races into the touring schedule, Theriault has qualified for five, twice finishing in the top 10. He’s also spending off weekends nearly five hours from home at Oxford, where that recent runner-up finish cemented his place as a driver to watch on Sunday.

Theriault will campaign an all-black, sponsor-wanted car out of his family’s shop in the non-tour event. A win wouldn’t pay points, just a first-place check in excess of $25,000 and prestige that would carry his name and reputation from the hinterlands to the heartland.
