84th anniversary of Puerto Penasco's founding | Rocky Point News

Rocky Point has come a long way since 1927, when it was nothing more than a quaint little fishing village and dubbed by many as the “greatest living aquarium”. These settlers fell in love with our rocky cliffs, volcanic lava and fine sandy dunes; they began to call this small site Punta de Piedra (Rock Point) or Punta Peñasco (Cliff Point).

Recognized as among the first to definitively establish themselves in Peñasco are Víctor Estrella, Benjamín Bustamante, Melquiades Palacio,  Juan Mercado and Tecla Bustamante.

The festivities took place July 9th & 10th commemorating 84 years since the founding of Puerto Peñasco and 59 since it became a municipality of Sonora. Hundreds of families gathered for the celebration.

This artistic/cultural event had many local artists: El Trio Zafiro, Grupo Hermanos Duran, Rabel, Banda “Los Hijos de os Duran”, Pedro Gómez, Martha Verónica, Grupo Norte, el Gringo Villaseñor, y Alberto Molina Valenzuela.

It is worth noting that just nine years ago, in July of 2002, in homage to both the known and unknown heroes who founded this fishing and tourist community, during the city’s 75th anniversary State powers were officially transferred to Puerto Peñasco, making it the capital of Sonora for one day.
