Interview: Writer-Director Aaron Posner tackles some explosive ...
Is a play about the battle between a very religious education and the desire to make art that is considered a blasphemy in the Hasidic tradition.
It strikes a deep chord is the most people. Perhaps that is why the Barrington Stage Company phones (BSC) was steadily ringing notes, and just today the company has added another week of performances to meet the growing demand for places. The cause of all the fuss?
Chaim Potok book, My Name is Asher Lev, adapted for the stage and directed by Aaron Posner.
Artistic Director Julianne Boyd has today announced that BSC has added another week of performances, the show extends to the middle of September. Performance dates are in step 2 Barrington August 18 to September 11 with an opening press Sunday, August 21 to 15 hours.
We had a chance to catch the playwright to ask about this new production featuring Daniel Cantor (men), Renata Friedman (The Women) and Adam Green (Asher Lev).
Perhaps you have read the book, many have. It's a beautiful history. My Name Is Asher Lev follows the journey of a young Jewish painter torn between his upbringing and his Hasidic desperate need to fulfill its promise of art. When his artistic genius threatens to destroy his relationship with his parents and the community, young Asher realizes he must make a difficult choice between art and faith. This adaptation of a modern classic agitation presents a heartbreaking and triumphant vision of what it means to be an artist.
(Have you noticed that the struggle between tradition and modern life is a frequent theme of plays and musicals at the Early Stage Company of Barrington?)
The new production will feature sets by Dan Conway, Olivera Gajic costumes, lighting by John Hoey, and sound by James Sugg. Rose Marie Packer is the production stage manager.
As you can see from the photo above, the cast and director are deep in rehearsals, but Aaron Posner has been generous enough to take some time out of his day to answer some questions Berkshire on stage. We hope his answers will deepen your enjoyment of this piece.
Berkshire on stage: What is it about the work of Chaim Potok draws you to it?
Aaron Posner: Haim wrote about the basic conflict between people and the powerful forces such as family, religion and society. It tends to be no villains in his stories, and very little writing or fancy pyrotechnics. His stories are full of people doing their best to live their lives in harmony with their own deeply held beliefs and convictions. But sometimes, when the beliefs and convictions are in conflict within a community or family, even within ourselves, it can be very tricky. This is where Chaim located most of his work.He explored large, difficult questions in an honest, intelligent and insightful.
