NBA Draft Day Trades and Analysis | Matthew Lukoskie Journalism ...
I went over the three big trades that went down on draft night, detailing the pluses and minuses for each team. I didn’t cover the Houston, Minnesota and Chicago three team deal, as it was too complicated and there were no current NBA players that were essential to the deal. Analysis can be given if necessary, and the draft grades will be coming up after this.
Trades:
Teams involved- Denver, Portland and Dallas
Denver receives- PG Andre Miller, rights to SF Jordan Hamilton (No. 26 pick), future second round pick
Portland receives- PG Raymond Felton
Dallas receives- SG Rudy Fernandez, rights to PG Petteri Koponen (2007 draft pick)
Denver: The Nuggets dealt away Raymond Felton, who was likely to leave via free agency next summer. In return, they get Andre Miller back (who played there from 2003-2007). Miller will help them stay competitive this year, while also having his contract end after this season. In addition to swapping point guards in the final year on their contracts, the Nuggets also received a great value in Jordan Hamilton. He doesn’t necessarily fit a need with both Danilo Gallinari and possibly Wilson Chandler in town, but his upside is much greater than his draft position. He could end up paying big dividends at the end of the day. Denver also received a future second round pick. Grade- A
Portland- Portland dealt away Andre Miller, Rudy Fernandez and the draft rights to Petteri Koponen (2007 first round draft pick) for just one player. But that one player is well worth it for the Trailblazers. In getting Raymond Felton, Portland has a point guard that can spread the floor as a perimeter shooter. With guys like Brandon Roy and Gerald Wallace on the team, Miller was not a good fit. Felton should make them a more well balanced team offensively. Fernandez was hardly playing, so his departure shouldn’t affect the team. The same goes for Koponen, who has yet to play in the states since being drafted. The worst-case scenario for Portland is that Felton doesn’t work out how they would have liked and they let him go in free agency. With Miller and Fernandez, both in the final years of their contracts, likely to leave next summer anyway, the only real loss here is Koponen. And that isn’t much of a loss. Grade- A-
Dallas- The champion Dallas Mavericks basically traded the No.
