Why folic acid is vital before becoming pregnant

As someone who is generally not in favour of taking supplements, I have to come out and say there is one time when it is essential.

That is when it comes to taking folic acid before and during pregnancy.

It is the before that I want to write about today. More than a decade ago, I came across some research that showed taking folic acid three months before you and your partner try for a baby is crucially important. Let me explain why.

In a mum-to-be, shortage of folic acid can cause neural tube defects (NTDs), which can lead to a baby being born with spina bifida, hydrocephalus and the fatal condition anencephaly. This is because folic acid is necessary for the normal development of the spinal cord and brain.

What people do not realise is that this part of an unborn baby’s development is complete as early as the 28th day of pregnancy. This is often in advance of many women even knowing they are pregnant.

Day 28 of your pregnancy is only three weeks after your missed period and you may have not even taken a pregnancy test by that time.

So, in order to give your baby full protection against NTDs, your folic acid levels need to be topped up before you conceive. Fewer than five in 100 women in the UK take a folic acid supplement in time to ensure their baby is protected.

So, the golden rule is to start taking folic acid supplements at a dose of 400 micrograms a day as soon as you and your partner even think about trying to start a family. It is good for you, anyway, and you cannot overdose.

I was thrilled to read about a new campaign, Go Folic! (visit www.asbah.org), which aims to get any woman who might become pregnant to take the right amount of folic acid at the right time – well before they become pregnant.

The sad truth is that many women think, mistakenly, that you only start taking folic acid when you find out that you are expecting a baby.

So, what would be prevented if folic acid was taken early?

There are more than 900 pregnancies a year affected by NTDs. Most are not detected until the ultrasound scan at 18+ weeks. In four out of five cases, parents decide to end a pregnancy after much agonising about the decision.

We know that three-quarters of NTDs could be prevented if women took folic acid properly – that is 400 micrograms daily three months before conception. What a lot of heartache that could save.

March of Dimes: 'Healthy babies are worth the wait'

Too often, women are mistaken about when they got pregnant, which can throw off the calculation of their due date. Even when a "dating" ultrasound is done during the first trimester of pregnancy, there can be as much as a two-week margin of error.
