Understanding The Geek Humor Of Yesteryear And This Year | Geek Of ...
It’s funny to look back over the past 30 years or so, and compare the senses of humor between the geeks of yesteryear (sounds like a great movie title “The Geeks Of Yesteryear”, starring John Cera as Bill Gates), and the evolved geeks of today. Where three decades ago, geeks were tapping away on their TRS-80′s, Apple II’s, and Commodore Pets, geek humor was often expressed a computer club meetings, expressed through Space Invaders t-shirts and jokes printed on tractor-feed dot matrix printer paper.
To read about computer jokes, you had to connect to your friend’s bulletin board through your 300 baud modem, and they maybe consisted of ASCII porn of Lieutenant Uhura from Star Trek, or poked fun at Pong or crappy Atari Games.
Today, it’s hard to keep up with what is chic geek humor. Computer programming jokes have been all written (in C, Perl, and PHP), and subsequently debugged, recompiled, and digitally regurgitated into derivative jokes in every other programming language. Computer game jokes require sophistication, and it’s not as politically correct to make fun of World Of Warcraft players, as it is to make fun of the character of some World Of Warcraft player…even Mr. T. was caught up in the commercial pop culture of WOW, and he was funny whether we were laughing at him or with him.
Twitter forces us to keep our jokes short and sweet; Facebook presses us to instantly advise you if we liked your joke, and if you post your joke on your Myspace page, only robots and garage band members will read it.
Geek humor has evolved almost as much as the geek him/herself. With so much information instantly available to everyone through feeds, updates, and social bookmarking sites that cram data through our eyesockets faster than Pac-Man could gobble dots, it’s difficult to understand what the educated geek requires to stimulate his digital funnybone.
Youtube has made Bob Saget disposable, and we can gratify ourselves for hours on crotch hit videos, and skateboard accidents. Where we used to laugh at dancing hamsters, now it’s girls and dead squirrels that cause us to guffaw. Can our cravings for geek humor ever be satiated when we now live in a make-me-laugh-on-demand world?
It takes me time to write something funny, and then it takes more time for someone to read and comprehend the humor in my writing. Does anyone want to bother reading a (hopefully) funny story or article when they can click on a College Humor “original short” and laugh themselves silly on Super Mario spoofs and cutting-edge office humor? Why read at all when the Internet can directly stream the funniness to my brain?
