Suite could be comfortable, sophisticated space

Jackie recently purchased a 645-square-foot condominium from plans and she asks for comment and decorating input.

Interior designer Dolores Pian is happy to oblige.

“Lucky Jackie, she has a straightforward layout. The builder has planned and managed the square footage. Thankfully, there’s no space wasted on two bathrooms,” says Pian, owner of Spaces Custom Interiors ( www.spaces.to ).

Decent features, like a good-sized hall closet and the washer and dryer stowed away from the foyer and food prep counters, delight Pian.

If Jackie takes care with her choice of furnishings she will be able to turn this suite into a comfortable and sophisticated space.

First, the den must be attractive because it’s the introduction to this home. Pian cautions Jackie not to turn it into a catch-all and junk room.

Pian advises installing storage units with sliding doors against the left (exterior) wall. Jackie would do well to look at the different options at Ikea and go for one with a closet organizing system inside and a black finish outside.

“I have a vision for this condo,” Pian admits. “I see it with a mid-century modern interior. This can be achieved with sleek furnishings and a clean Japanese–like ambience with a sexy black, red and white colour scheme.”

Based on this concept, Pian would also set up a wall-to-wall office unit (also a black finish) incorporating a laptop desk, shelving and overhead cupboards in the den opposite the storage unit. This leaves the long exterior wall for an apartment-sized pullout sofa for a guest. And if Jackie adds a good reading lamp, she can create a cosy place to curl up and read.

To avoid falling into the den from the front door, Pian suggests setting up a three-panel folding shoji screen in the den entrance. On the den side, Jackie could have a small lacquered red or black chest-of-drawers that would keep the screen from being knocked over. Pian advises finishing the room with a modern carpet, preferably one with a grey background and red and white accents.

A funky overhead fixture that provides bright light, and a runner in a modern pattern will liven up the foyer. Against the tub wall, there’s room for a sliver of a console table with a mirror above so Jackie can primp before leaving home. The two wing walls at the end of the corridor are ideal spots for art. Pian urges Jackie to go big and dramatic here. Colourful vintage posters would be a good choice.

This works well if you have a wall plug near your headboard. You just plug this light in and adjust its flexible 23″ neck to just about any position. It has a 6′ electrical cord that allows you to plug it in even if you need an extension cord.
