Savannah's 'other port' having near record year
When most of us think about Georgia Ports, we tend to think of the millions of containers coming through Garden City Terminal every year. But there is more to the ports’ success than box numbers.
Next time you’re coming over the Talmadge Bridge, take a look down at the Ocean Terminal docks just below on the Savannah side.
With break bulk leading all commodity groups in terms of year-over-year growth at the ports, Georgia Ports’ “other” terminal is packed to the gills.
“Ocean Terminal has had a phenomenal year,” GPA executive director Curtis Foltz told his board at its most recent meeting.
The deepwater terminal that handles primarily break bulk, auto and machinery cargo has had extremely strong growth, due primarily to a world economy that was – until a few weeks ago – starting to recover.
For fiscal 2011, which ended June 30, Ocean Terminal break bulk was up 33.7 percent year-over-year, coming in at slightly more than 1.1 million tons. OT break-bulk tonnage was up 27.2 percent in June alone.
Import increases were notched in steel and iron, lumber and machinery. Export growth was driven by wood pulp, machinery and autos.
“What moves through Ocean Terminal is driven by a different economy than what moves through our container facility,” Foltz said. “In fiscal 2011, heavy machinery through OT was close to record levels – most of it going to growing demographics in Australia, the Middle East and Latin America.
Exports of forestry products also rebounded, driven by domestic demand abroad, while imports of rubber, iron and steel reflected the recovery in the automotive market.
Break bulk is a term for general, non-containerized cargo of various sizes, often transported on pallets or in sacks, drums or bags. The term comes from the old tradition of “breaking bulk,” or breaking cargo down into groups that can be handled by the available equipment.
Examples of break-bulk cargo include logs, coffee beans, rubber or wood pulp.
While he was more optimistic a few weeks ago about the outlook for fiscal 2012, Foltz said this week that growing concerns in the European Union about Greece, Spain and Portugal, as well as new issues with the U.S. economy will likely temper world markets in the coming year.
Bucking the trend
Containerized imports coming into U.S. seaports were down in June, ending an 18-month streak of year-over-year improvements dating to December 2009.

It has been an uncannily accurate lead indicator at each twist and turn of our economic drama over the past five years, and is telling us now that the Fed's kindling wood has at last begun to ignite the damp coals of the US financial system.
Hanging Houses of Cuenca – Spain
Cuenca is a city in central Spain and there is nothing unusual, except the hanging houses. These famous buildings are famous around the world and tourists come to see them because they seem to be literally "hanging" from the cliffs. They were built directly from the cliff and the view is spectacular. No one knows exactly when they were built, but it was some time between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. They were rebuilt in the twentieth century, because there were only three of them left and they were already considered a landmark of the place.
The hanging houses were built in the Gothic style and have a wealth of detail of wood inside. But the gateway to outdoor Renaissance and making them more interesting. Like most Spanish houses in the past had a name, three houses have very nice names: one is called the house sirens and the other two are the kings' houses. These are now housing the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art and lonely on the left is transformed into a restaurant. I guess you should not be afraid of heights, if you go there.
